Donald Barten

1915

On 25 January 1915, following training, Donald was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force. He remained there until 13 March 1915.

Donald was sent from France to Egypt. The Suez Canal, a very important line of strategic communication had been closed (illegally) by Britain to enemy belligerents in 1914. There were 70,000 allied troops in Egypt in January 1915. The Canal was attacked unsuccessfully by the Turks in February 1915, with the result that a large British garrison was kept in Egypt throughout 1915.

Donald was in Egypt until 9 September 1915. It is quite possible that he was not involved in any fighting during this period.
