Donald Barten joined Marshall Snellgrove, a prestigious department store in Oxford St, London, at the age of 15, as an apprentice. He remained there for three years.

On joining the army, he described his trade as 'traveller' (presumably meaning travelling salesman).

Donald was a keen sportsman and continued to play football into his twenties.
