Donald Barten

Childhood

Donald Barten's parents were Esther Swaffer and Edward Barten. They had six daughters and three sons. Donald was born on 7 February 1889, the eighth of the nine children.

Donald's aunt Mary Elizabeth Swaffer and her husband John Edmund Barnard also had a large family, of eight children. John Edmund died in 1882 and the two families combined, living together at Stourport, Worcestershire.

In 1890 both Donald's father Edward and aunt Mary Elizabeth died, leaving Esther with seventeen children to look after. She had no choice but to send most of them, including Donald, to orphanages.

Donald was educated at the Infant Orphan Asylum, Wanstead, Essex and at Ashford British School. The Infant Orphan Asylum, later known as the The Royal Wanstead School, was a unique charitable institution founded for 'the protection of fatherless children who are respectably descended but without means adequate to their support'.
