The statues are mostly in pieces

A friend, knowing I was interested both in Berlin and in photography, gave me this album of views of the city. It had been brought back by her mother, who had been posted there with the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's branch of the British Army) at the end of World War II.

I immediately became interested in the ephemeral figures caught going about their daily lives, and in the hand-written comments, matter-of-fact yet poignant in their precise descriptions of the destruction.
